FROM THE MAGAZINE SHELF is an occasional feature of the FOUNTAINDALE LIBRARY REFERENCE BLOG. Postings will highlight titles that you might find of interest, but haven’t picked up to read and explore. In addition to the titles that are in the Magazine Area on the 2nd Floor of our library, postings will also include titles from Zinio, the library’s digital magazine collection.

If you are among the many aviation enthusiasts residing in the Bolingbrook area, this summer will offer some great opportunities for viewing a variety of aircraft.

The weekend of June 3rd and 4th will bring in many aircraft to Bolingbrook’s Clow International Airport for the 2017 Cavalcade of Planes. In its 17th year, the June event will see the return of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s  Ford Tri-Motor plane (pictured below), along with a number of military “War Birds,” and a variety of other planes. The weekend provides a great opportunity, also, to visit the Illinois Aviation Museum and learn about their restoration projects and see the Zenith 750 Cruzer.

Later this summer,  August 25 – 27,  the Experimental Aircraft Association’s B-17 Bomber, “Aluminum Overcast” (shown below) will be at Lewis Airport in Romeoville. This “flagship” of the EAA is one of only ten presently airworthy Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses.

At both events where EAA aircraft are scheduled, you can arrange to book a flight, either in advance by going to the “Flight Experiences” page on the EAA website or onsite at the event.

When the Aluminum Overcast B-17 bomber was at Lewis Airport on September 8, 2013, I had an opportunity to tour the inside of this amazing aircraft. Seeing the bomber up close gave me a much greater appreciation for the service given by those heroes who crewed these and other military aircraft throughout World War II.

If you are in town for either of these events, you may want to stop in to the Fountaindale Public Library and check out some of the aviation magazines that we have in our Magazines Area on the 2nd Floor. We have the following titles available: Aviation Week & Space Technology (Weekly / Aviation Week Network),  Sport Aviation (Monthly / Experimental Aircraft Association), and Flying (Monthly / Bonnier Corporation). Also, our Zinio eMagazine collection has back issues of Aviation Week & Space Technology for the period February 04, 2013 to February 02, 2015.

Have a look and “Keep ‘Em Flying!”
