FROM THE MAGAZINE SHELF is an occasional feature of the FOUNTAINDALE LIBRARY REFERENCE BLOG. Postings will highlight titles that you might find of interest, but haven’t picked up to read and explore. In addition to the titles that are in the Magazine Area on the 2nd Floor of our library, postings will also include titles from Zinio, the library’s digital magazine collection.
With the Easter and Passover holidays quickly approaching, many of you may be thinking of attractive and tasty desserts to put on your tables. You may be preparing something that your family looks forward to each year, but you may also be thinking of trying something new and different.
One way to get inspired is to go through the current issues of some of the food magazines and the more general magazines that have food related features. We subscribe to some really good ones and you can find them in the Magazines and Newspapers area of the library on the 2nd Floor. One of the problems, though, is that the issue you really want to look at may have been checked out by another customer. That’s where Zinio, our digital magazine collection, can be a real help. The issues in the collection are always available, 24/7. Among the titles you may want to look at are Food Network Magazine, Martha Stewart, Taste of Home, Family Circle, allrecipes MAGAZINE, Woman’s Day, and GH (Good Housekeeping). Their April issues are filled with great ideas for creating a tasty dessert that can be the centerpiece for your holiday table.
Recently, a new feature has been added to Zinio than can speed your searching through the collection for just the right recipe. Once you login to your Zinio account, you can use the Article Search option and search by keyword, such as “Easter.” You can also narrow your search to only the April 2017 issues in the database, if you wish. You’ll find the Article Search feature to be a great time saver. It can also help you find great information and recipes in magazines that you may not regularly look at. The illustrations below show how an article search can be done very easily. For this example, I searched by just the keyword “Easter” and narrowed my search to those issues published only during the month of April. The database provided me with close to a hundred results, This feature probably cut my search time in half!
To give you an idea of some of the neat stuff you’ll find, I’ve included a few of the many recipes I found when I was searching the April 2017 issues.
So hop to it, give Zinio a try, and don’t forget to use that helpful Article Search feature over the coming days. You may just may be very pleasantly surprised at what you can create for your holiday table!.
