Summer is the time of the year when people like to enjoy simpler, more casual meals with their family and friends. Often cupcakes will be on the menu for dessert. They’re small, easy to make, and tasty. However, they certainly don’t need to be boring.
You can liven up your cupcake repertoire by spending a little time with two fun books : Hello, Cupcake! and What’s New, Cupcake? Both are done by the team of cooking teacher / food stylist Karen Tack and photographer Alan Richardson.
Using basic cupcakes, some frostings, a couple of handful of candies, a few decorating tools and a lot of ingenuity, the authors show you how to create cupcakes that look like a werewolf, a rubber ducky, garden vegetables, a party princess, a furry dog, and dozens of other designs.
The directions in the books are clear, organized and well illustrated . Both books also include lists of sources for baking supplies, party and craft supplies and gourmet candy supplies.
The great thing about both these books is that the cupcake designs are really something the average home baker / decorator can accomplish. I learned how to make both the werewolf and the owl from reading Hello, Cupcake! With a little practice, you’ll be surprised at what you can create.
So the next time the occasion calls for cupcakes, think outside of the cake box and pick up one of these books at the library.
