Most of us first saw her in the 1995 movie Clueless where she played a hapless high school student taken under wing by popular girls Cher and Dionne. They showed her the ropes and made her a little less clueless. Even though Brittany Murphy was good in the part, most of the attention from the movie was focused on Alicia Silverstone, who played Cher and had been previously in a string of popular Aerosmith music videos from their album Get a Grip.
However, it was Brittany Murphy who wound up with the more substantial career. She went on to do some small roles in failed TV shows before landing a strong supporting role as a patient in a mental hospital in the 1999 movie Girl Interrupted, a Winona Ryder film that launched Angelina Jolie to superstardom and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
But Brittany wasn’t done playing people on the edge of sanity. In 2001 she got her first major role as an emotional disturbed psych patient in the Michael Douglas movie Don’t Say a Word. The movie was the first hit movie after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and it pushed Brittany into the limelight.
After that, Brittany landed a series of starring roles in movies like Sin City, Uptown Girls, and Just Married. But it was a 2002 movie called 8 Mile that earned her the most acclaim. In it, she played the troubled girl friend of an up-and-coming rapper who was player by real life rapper Eminem.
