A Saturday with Bill the Poster Guy

A warm thanks to film art enthusiast and movie poster collector Bill Brandeis, who was in the library lobby on Saturday, November 17 displaying an exciting selection of posters for recently released and upcoming films.  Patrons were able to peruse and enjoy posters for over 30 popular movies, including current favorites Wreck-It Ralph and Breaking Dawn – Part 2, and forthcoming films The Hobbit, The Guilt Trip, Mama, Zero Dark Thirty, and Oz: The Great and Powerful.  Bill showcases his collection at the Fountaindale Public Library three Saturdays a year.  Look for him again in February 2013, when he will join us with a new selection of posters.  Please note that as the posters come from his personal collection, they are not for sale.

Are You a Permaculturist?

ImageCome join us as Ron and Vicki Nowicki of Downers Grove, who help families re-connect with the natural world through ecologically sustainable landscape design, will present a program March 5th at 1:30pm on how you can transform your own yard using the methods of permaculture.  Ron and Vicki weren’t caught up in appearances or styles.  They simply wanted to design something based on principles that were modeled after the natural world and how it worked.  Interestingly, Ron found himself borrowing from history to design an energy-efficient, passive solar home.  He used a New England Salt Box design with an ice house roof for summer cooling, a central fireplace, a wood stove fed by wood gathered primarily from assorted landscape jobs, a huge rain barrel and of course a root cellar for moist cold storage to accommodate a good portion of their summer crops.  With respect to the landscape, he and Vicki used evergreen windbreaks to conserve energy in the winter and deciduous shade trees to cool the house in the summer.  They never used a single bit of mown lawn but filled their landscape with native plants, perennial food plants and a gigantic vegetable and herb garden.  When they began to plant flowers to attract beneficial insects, birds and bats, they dubbed their entire site a gardenfarm.  Who knew that 30 years later they would become the quintessential suburban permaculturists?  Once a novelty, Circle GardenFarm is now able to supply an almost year-round bounty of “local”, organic food.

30 Spectacular Salads!

There is still space left in our 30 Spectacular Salads Program on Wednesday, August 3 at 7pm.  You do not need a library card to register.  Call 630-685-4176 or http://www.fountaindale.org

Kelly Donlea is back! This time she will demonstrate that salads can be anything but ordinary! She will show how adding lemon juice to a Perfect Pasta salad dramatically reduces the need for oils or mayonnaise.  Then experience how to use a creative combination of ingredients, as in a Black Bean Asparagus Salad, to achieve so much flavor that no oils or fats are needed at all.  FOOD SAMPLES WILL BE GIVEN OUT!

Who Said Tennis is Easy?

Every year, I religiously watch Wimbledon tennis coverage. I’m up at 6am for weekday coverage and I have “breakfast at Wimbledon”‘ 8am Sunday morning for the men’s final. Anyone who knows me, knows I love the sport. This year Wimbledon had one of its most exciting moments in tennis history. This past Tuesday a match was started between John Isner an American and Nicholas Mahut of France. The game was postponed due to darkness and scheduled to resume the following day. What happened overshadowed Wednesday’s events, including Queen Elizabeth II at Wimbledon for the first time in 30 some odd years. The two players were at 2 sets a piece, when they moved into the 5th and final set. Wimbledon does not employ a tie break on the final set, so the players have to slug it out until one breaks the other’s serve and then holds his own serve. Well, Isner and Mahut were tied, so the played and they played…. and they played. When they got to about 50 games a piece in the 5th, the scoreboard couldn’t keep up. These two players, neither player well-known or a big draw or the top players, suddenly had everyone’s attention. As tired as they were, they were making the shots, Isner had several match points, but to no avail.

Finally, darkness came again and the match was yet again postponed until Thursday. At this point they had played nearly 10 hours. Both players were exhausted, mentally and physically. Thursday both came back on the court to try to finish the match. After 11 hours and 5 minutes (some 5 hours longer then the previous longest match record) Isner broke Mahut and held his serve to win 70-68 in the 5th! He moved on to play the next day…. where he understandably lost in straight sets. But he along with Mahut will live on in tennis history with “that match that bumped the Queen off the headlines”. The two guys, most people hadn’t heard of outside of the tennis world, are in the world record books!

If you are interested in learning more about Wimbledon and its history you might want to try “Strokes of Genius” which is about one of the greatest men’s finals ever played between defending champ Roger Federer and “The King of Clay” Rafa Nadal.  There is also “A Champion’s Mind” the biography of 7 time Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras. And of course there is Wimbledon’s official website, which during the tournament gives the latest news and latest scores.
